Then Job answered and said,

I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

No le podrá responder a una cosa entre mil. | 3 Hat er Lust, mit ihm zu streiten, so kann er ihm auf tausend nicht eins antworten. |

He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?

Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.

Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.

Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.

Which maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south.

Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.

Y maravillosas, sin número. | 10 Er tut große Dinge, die nicht zu erforschen, und Wunder, die nicht zu zählen sind. |

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.
| 11 He aquí que él pasará delante de mí, y yo no lo veré;
Pasará, y no lo entenderé. | 11 Siehe, er geht an mir vorüber, ohne daß ich's gewahr werde, und wandelt vorbei, ohne daß ich's merke. |

Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
| 12 He aquí, arrebatará; ¿quién le hará restituir?
¿Quién le dirá: ¿Qué haces? | 12 Siehe, wenn er wegrafft, wer will ihm wehren? Wer will zu ihm sagen: Was machst du? |

If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
| 13 Dios no volverá atrás su ira,
Y debajo de él se abaten los que ayudan a los soberbios. | 13 Gott wehrt seinem Zorn nicht; unter ihn mußten sich beugen die Helfer Rahabs*. |

How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
| 14 ¿Cuánto menos le responderé yo,
Y hablaré con él palabras escogidas? | 14 Wie sollte dann ich ihm antworten und Worte finden vor ihm? |

Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.
| 15 Aunque fuese yo justo, no respondería;
Antes habría de rogar a mi juez. | 15 Wenn ich auch recht habe, so kann ich ihm doch nicht antworten, sondern ich müßte um mein Recht flehen. |

If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.
| 16 Si yo le invocara, y él me respondiese,
Aún no creeré que haya escuchado mi voz. | 16 Wenn ich ihn auch anrufe, daß er mir antwortet, so glaube ich nicht, daß er meine Stimme hört, |

For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.
| 17 Porque me ha quebrantado con tempestad,
Y ha aumentado mis heridas sin causa. | 17 vielmehr greift er nach mir im Wettersturm und schlägt mir viele Wunden ohne Grund. |

He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.
| 18 No me ha concedido que tome aliento,
Sino que me ha llenado de amarguras. | 18 Er läßt mich nicht Atem schöpfen, sondern sättigt mich mit Bitternis. |

If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
| 19 Si habláremos de su potencia, por cierto es fuerte;
Si de juicio, ¿quién me emplazará? | 19 Geht es um Macht und Gewalt: Er hat sie. Geht es um Recht: Wer will ihn vorladen?a |

If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
| 20 Si yo me justificare, me condenaría mi boca;
Si me dijere perfecto, esto me haría inicuo. | 20 Wäre ich gerecht, so müßte mich doch mein Mund verdammen; wäre ich unschuldig, so würde er mich doch schuldig sprechen. |

Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.
| 21 Si fuese íntegro, no haría caso de mí mismo;
Despreciaría mi vida. | 21 Ich bin unschuldig! Ich möchte nicht mehr leben; ich verachte mein Leben. |

This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.
| 22 Una cosa resta que yo diga:
Al perfecto y al impío él los consume. | 22 Es ist eins, darum sage ich: Er bringt den Frommen um wie den Gottlosen. |

If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
| 23 Si azote mata de repente,
Se ríe del sufrimiento de los inocentes. | 23 Wenn seine Geißel plötzlich tötet, so spottet er über die Verzweiflung der Unschuldigen. |

The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?
| 24 La tierra es entregada en manos de los impíos,
Y él cubre el rostro de sus jueces.
Si no es él, ¿quién es? ¿Dónde está? | 24 Er hat die Erde unter gottlose Hände gegeben, und das Antlitz ihrer Richter verhüllt er. Wenn nicht er, wer anders sollte es tun? |

Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.
| 25 Mis días han sido más ligeros que un correo;
Huyeron, y no vieron el bien. | 25 Meine Tage sind schneller gewesen als ein Läufer; sie sind dahingeflohen und haben nichts Gutes erlebt. |

They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.

If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:

Dejaré mi triste semblante, y me esforzaré, | 27 Wenn ich denke: Ich will meine Klage vergessen und mein Angesicht ändern und heiter bleiben, |

I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.
| 28 Me turban todos mis dolores;
Sé que no me tendrás por inocente. | 28 so fürchte ich doch wieder alle meine Schmerzen, weil ich weiß, daß du mich nicht unschuldig sprechen wirst. |

If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
| 29 Yo soy impío;
¿Para qué trabajaré en vano? | 29 Ich soll ja doch schuldig sein! Warum mühe ich mich denn so vergeblich? |

If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
| 30 Aunque me lave con aguas de nieve,
Y limpie mis manos con la limpieza misma, | 30 Wenn ich mich auch mit Schneewasser wüsche und reinigte meine Hände mit Lauge, |

Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.
| 31 Aún me hundirás en el hoyo,
Y mis propios vestidos me abominarán. | 31 so wirst du mich doch eintauchen in die Grube, daß sich meine Kleider vor mir ekeln. |

For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment.
| 32 Porque no es hombre como yo, para que yo le responda,
Y vengamos juntamente a juicio. | 32 Denn er ist nicht ein Mensch wie ich, dem ich antworten könnte, daß wir miteinander vor Gericht gingen. |

Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
| 33 No hay entre nosotros árbitro
Que ponga su mano sobre nosotros dos. | 33 Daß es doch zwischen uns einen Schiedsmann gäbe, der seine Hand auf uns beide legte! |

Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:
| 34 Quite de sobre mí su vara,
Y su terror no me espante. | 34 Daß er seine Rute von mir nehme und mich nicht mehr ängstige! |

Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me. | 35 Entonces hablaré, y no le temeré;
Porque en este estado no estoy en mí. | 35 So wollte ich reden und mich nicht vor ihm fürchten, denn ich bin mir keiner Schuld bewußt. |
